Energy

Today I made my first charm. Until now I’ve just done little spells – candle magick mostly. But today I made a charm for a friend who needs some extra healing. And I am wiped!

I haven’t noticed any real energy loss prior to today, but I am exhausted. Who knew?

Feeling Witchy?

I attended a seminar by Bearbridge Academy on witchcraft and one of the participants complained that she only “felt witchy” when casting a spell. Felt witchy? What the heck is that?

I don’t “feel witchy.” I feel like myself, and being a witch is just part of me. So I would argue that feeling like me is “feeling witchy.”

I DO feel more centered and connected to the universe as a whole after I cast a spell. But I don’t define this as “feeling witchy.” Magick is nothing more than taking advantage of the inherently chaotic nature of the universe. I believe casting a spell with intent helps you be more aware of that amazingly complex system we live in are generally oblivious to.

If you need to “feel witchy” maybe you should rethink what being a witch is.

What is Magick?

Have you heard of chaos theory? Most people have heard the butterfly hypothesis: a butterfly flaps its wings in South America and the resulting air movements interact with the current air flow, which interacts with the ocean temperature, which interacts with… and eventually a trailer park in Kansas is taken out by a tornado.

Now, before I get snarky comments about hunting down that butterfly and killing it, this is a thought experiment. Probably. The truth is we don’t know. The world is incredibly complex, full of variables we haven’t identified that interact with each other in ways we don’t understand. So could a butterfly take out a trailer park? Maybe. I don’t know. And no one else does either.

This is just earth. There are 8 other planets in our solar system (Pluto will always be a planet in my heart). There are billions and billions (Carl Sagan is rolling in his grave) of solar systems in the universe. Each with its own set of unique variables and reactions. And that’s not even counting dark matter…

The point is the universe is infinitely complex. And we have no idea how it works, other than in broad strokes. That butterfly in South America may not take out a trailer park in Kansas – it might make it rain on a planet we’ve never heard of in another galaxy. We don’t know.

So what does this have to do with magick? I believe magick is a practical application of chaos theory. We do something here and now -, burn some herbs and says some words, and these actions interact with who knows what in ways we can’t understand, and eventually your grandmother recovers from bursitis. THAT’S magick. Doing something we understand (burning candles, making potions) that interacts in the universe in an unknowable fashion but which results in a predictable result.

We call it magick because we don’t understand how the result happens. But we know how to invoke the chain reaction that leads to the final result. But really, it’s incomprehensible science at work.

My First Tarot Reading

I did my first tarot reading today and it went really well! I really actually drew meaningful cards and told a story that spoke truth and companion to my querent! I feel like I really had some insight today and helped somebody dealing with big questions and a scary personal journey.

Thanks to Biddy Tarot for helping me complete my reading. I used their Celtic Cross layout and while most of my interpretations came from the booklet in the Rider Waite Tarot deck, the final interpretation, for Card 10, which was the Star reversed, came from Biddy Tarot again. Which is great, because the booklet was giving me an outcome that was awful. Biddy Tarot explained that the Star reversed meant the querent should pay attention to themselves, practice self-care, and to nourish their spirit. Which was the perfect conclusion to the querent’s question. They left with a huge smile on their face!

I may have a true gift when it comes to the tarot! I will let you know more as my journey continues.
